ABOUT US

History
Urban Neighborhood Services (UNS) was founded in 2004 by Coney Island resident, Mathylde Frontus.
The non-profit organization was conceived by the founder as a vehicle to effect positive change and
address social needs in the community, which had been historically under-served.  During its first few
years, UNS planned for future activities by holding focus groups and rap sessions with local residents in
order to gain perspective on the compelling issues that matter most to the community.

In June of 2008, the agency moved into its first office space after offering a variety of grassroots
programming on topics such health and wellness, academic achievement, police-community relations,
among other relevant subjects.  It was soon propelled into a more prominent role in the community. The
organization currently offers an array of important programs and services.

Mission
Urban Neighborhood Services seeks to enhance the quality of life of urban residents and community
members by offering an array of supportive services that build on the strengths of individuals, families,
and groups, with whom we partner to help achieve their goals. We also seek to conduct research on issues
affecting urban communities, to disseminate our findings to local and national audiences, and to
participate in the public dialogue about how to rebuild and strengthen America's inner cities.  UNS raises
awareness on important social issues such a the unmet needs of LGBTQ youth and veterans.

Vision
Urban neighborhood Services envisions a community where residents are informed, empowered, and
well-prepared to achieve personally-determined goals for them and their families.
