Financial Paths Project

Urban Neighborhood Services (UNS) offers year-round seminars and workshops on personal
finance, homeownership and small business, thanks to our team of financial professionals
and experts, who also provide one-on-one financial counseling at our office.  We often
collaborate with financial institutions and entities such as Citibank, John Hancock Financial
Network, Go Jay Enterprises, and Primerica Financial Services. All financial services are
provided free of charge.

Veterans Outreach Project

UNS hosts a monthly outreach meeting for local veterans and their families where a range of
topics regarding veterans' issues are discussed.  A representative from the New York State
Division of Veterans Affairs also holds office hours at Urban Neighborhood Services to assist
local veterans with any matters or concerns.

CHIA Project: Community Health Information Access

As UNS seeks to promote the health and well-being of our community, we have a specific table
in our office from which we distribute an array of health literature as well as male and female
condoms. We receive our materials from city, state, and federal sources and replenish the
literature on a regular basis.  In addition, UNS collaborates with various partners to offer
health education programming on nutrition, fitness, disease preven- tion and more.

LGBTQ Safe Zone

UNS recognizes that the LGBTQ population has been traditionally under-served, especially in
ethnic minority communities. We are proud to offer a safe space for LGBTQ youth and families
to discuss their needs and receive referrals for various services. We also collaborate with
prominent LGBTQ organizations throughout NYC to offer trainings to Coney Island
organizations about how to meet the needs of the LGBTQ community and create a non-
discriminatory work environment.

Summer Youth Leadership Project

Since 2007, UNS has offered the Summer Youth Leadership Project,  an 8-week summer
program for high-school students, which emphasizes leadership development, critical thinking
skills, and community service.  In 2009, UNS offered the Summer Youth Academy in Hospit-
ality, Tourism, and Entertainment, in partnership with Ringling Brothers and Barnum &Bailey
Circus (The Coney Island Boom-A-Ring).

College Bound Project

UNS offers the College Bound Project, which consists of the College Tour Program, Free SAT
Prep Courses, and the College Forum. Since 2007, UNS has taken high school students from
the Coney Island community and surrounding neighborhoods to visit college campuses and
participate in exciting tours. Students have visited two-year schools such as Kingsborough
Community College, four-year private institutions such as Long Island University and New
York University, and Ivy-League campuses such Harvard University.  In 2008, we began offering
free SAT prep courses at the Broklyn Public Library, Coney Island Branch.  The College Forum
began in 2009 and presents 4 topics a year for college bound students and their parents, to
help them navigate the college admissions process.  Topics for the 2009-2010 school year
include:  “Applying to College and Paying For It: Everything You Need to Know”; “Getting Into
an Ivy-League School; Easier than you Might Think”; “Four-year, Two-year, Public or Private:
Which College is Best for Me?”, and “Majoring in Math, Science, or Engineering: Why You
Should Strongly Consider It?”

Job and Housing Search Assistance
UNS is one of the first destinations of job seekers in the community.  We have an extensive
and varied listing of job opportunities and job training programs, to which we regularly refer
candidates. UNS also compiles a listing of available apartments, rooms for rent, and properties
for sale, some of which accept programs such as HUD and Section 8, while others are market-
rate.

Information and Referral
Urban Neighborhood Services has an extensive directory of information and services such as
food pantries, GED training, shelters, and other social services, which fall outside of our
scope.  An important part of our work is referring members of the community to the appropriate
places where they can get their needs met.
